ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Last night both the men’s and women’s St. Cloud State basketball teams competed in the first round of the NSIC tournament at Halenbeck Hall and both were able to escape with victories. The men defeated Concordia-St. Paul 95 to 90. and the women defeated Southwest Minnesota State 72 to 43. This was the first time since 2008 that the SCSU women made it to the conference tournament. They showed that they deserved to be the 1 seed in the north when they beat up on the mustangs. It was a close game in the first half, neither team shot the ball well from deep, but it was the huskies 2nd half adjustments that helped them get past the mustangs and into the 2nd round. The women’s team will host Winona State at Halenbeck Hall on Saturday at 2 pm.
As for the men, they were searching for someone to step up in the absence of leading scorer Theo Rothstein. Kevin Levandowski answered the call, scoring a career high 30 points to help the Huskies in the win. The Huskies shot 32-34 from the free throw line and both the Huskies and Golden Bears shot tremendously from behind the arc. This one was tied up at 39 at the half. The Golden Bears were able to grab a lead but the Huskies backcourt with Shaun Jensen and Levandowski, really propelled the Huskies to the 95 to 90 victory. The men will be at home against Upper Iowa on Saturday in Halenback Hall, tipoff for that one is at 4 pm.
The men lost to Upper Iowa earlier this season at Halenbeck Hall on a late 3 pointer by the Peacocks. The women also lost to Winona State in overtime at Halenbeck Hall. Both games at Halenbeck on Saturday will be great matchups.
