In an effort to bring the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia to football fans in Singapore, broadcasting companies Mediacorp, Singtel and StarHub shall be working together, with all three broadcasters giving fans the complete FIFA World Cup event via a series of paid subscription packages at the same FIFA World Cup tariff as four years previous.
There will be no increase in price for the packages which are $92.16 up until May 22 and then $112.35 from May 23 onwards and is the first time that prices have remained the same since the paid subscription World Cup service was first offered in 2002.
The chief executive officer, consumer Singapore at Singtel, Mr Yuen Kuan Moon has said that as they have been responsible for the broadcast of the World Cup to fans of the event since 2010, they are aware of how seriously the people of Singapore regard the tournament and that they are pleased to be working hand in hand with their fellow broadcasters to once again bring the World Cup to Singapore.
The 64 football matches of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 will be broadcast over Singtel TV, Singtel TV GO and the Singtel CAST app.
The event will be held in Russia this year from June 24 to July 15 2018 with matches taking place in 12 different venues over 11 different cities, including the famed Luzhniki Stadium which resides in Moscow and will house the opening of the tournament as well as the final match of the event.
Mr Tan Tong Hai, CEO of StarHub expressed his happiness to be working with Singtel and Mediacorp to share the World Cup with Singapore, saying that he feels that football unites people and that even members of the general public who are not all that interested in the game get swept up by World Cup fever and become ardent fans overnight.
The three broadcasting giants plan to air the sporting event over both television and mobile phones, allowing viewers to tune in wherever they are to catch up on the action.
Ms Tham Loke Kheng, CEO at Mediacorp has stated that Mediacorp will be broadcasting 9 of the major matches for free on Okto, while all 64 matches shall be available through subscription on Toggle.
Singtel, StarHub and Mediacorp are to produce a series of special programs to show the highlights, insights and commentary.
Singapore World Cup fans will be able to view the entire tournament over several channels, Singtel TV GO, CAST, Singtel TV, StarHub Go, StarHub, Toggle by Mediacorp and will be treated to 9 free games which they can view on freeto-airtelevision, which is 5 more than last year, making 2018 the largest amount of free to view games.
Sponsorship issues for FIFA
FIFA has revealed that this year it has been more challenging to bring in sponsors as less companies have signed sponsorship deals than for the 2014 World Cup which was held in Brazil. However, familiar names such as Coca-Cola, Visa, Adidas and Hyundai will continue to sponsor the FIFA World Cup.
